The Jam Seri workshop — calm and orderly

About Jam Seri

A workshop built on patience and respect for the craft

We've been working on watches in Johor Bahru for years — not because it's efficient, but because we think each piece is worth the time.

Our Story

How Jam Seri began

Jam Seri started as a single bench in Johor Bahru, set up by someone who believed that a watch deserves to be repaired properly — not quickly. The name, which means "beautiful time" in Malay, was chosen deliberately. Time, after all, is what we work with.

Over the years, word spread quietly. Customers came in with quartz watches that had gone still, old mechanical pieces from their fathers, and dress watches with clouded crystals. Each one got the same treatment: examined first, discussed honestly, then attended to without shortcuts.

We remain a small workshop. That was always the intention. A smaller number of watches handled well is far better than volume handled carelessly.

Our Mission

Why we do this work

Many watches that arrive at our workshop are not especially valuable — but they mean something to the person who brings them in. A watch worn every day for a decade, or inherited from a grandparent, carries a kind of weight that has nothing to do with its retail price.

Our aim is to return each watch in better condition than it arrived, with an honest account of what was done and why. If we encounter something that changes the scope or cost of the work, we speak with the customer before proceeding. Decisions stay with the owner.

Our Approach

Assess → Discuss → Work → Return. In that order, without exception.

What We Stand By

The values that guide the workshop

Honesty About Condition

We tell you what we find, not what might justify more work. If a watch doesn't need a full overhaul, we'll say so.

Handled with Care

Every watch, regardless of brand or value, is treated as something worth looking after properly. No rushing, no guessing.

Customer Stays Informed

We prefer to over-communicate rather than leave things assumed. You'll always know what stage your watch is at.

Small and Intentional

We're not trying to grow into a chain. Staying small means we can pay proper attention to each piece that comes through the door.

Time Given Freely

If you want to ask questions about what we're doing or why, we'll take the time to explain. There's no pressure to hurry.

Craft Over Speed

Some repairs take longer than expected. We'd rather take extra time and do it well than rush a result that won't last.

How We Work

Standards we hold ourselves to

Written Condition Notes

Every watch receives a written condition note before work begins. You keep a copy.

Water-Resistance Testing

Suitable watches are tested for water resistance after seal work is complete, using proper testing tools.

Pre-Work Assessment

We assess each watch under magnification before quoting. What you're told upfront is as accurate as we can make it.

Case Protection During Crystal Work

Masking is applied carefully before any crystal work to protect the case surface and existing finish.

Customer Approval Before Extras

If we find additional work beyond the original scope, we stop and contact you. Nothing is done without your agreement.

Customer Data Privacy

Contact details provided to us are used only for the purpose of your service. We don't share information with third parties.

Our Expertise

Watch repair in Johor Bahru — what we know and how we do it

Quartz watches and mechanical movements each call for a different kind of attention. A quartz piece with a dead battery is often a straightforward job — but done without care, it's easy to disturb seals or introduce dust. We take the same methodical approach to a simple battery change as we do to a full movement service.

Vintage and mechanical watches present their own demands. Lubricants degrade over time, keyless works wear, and some older movements use parts that are no longer in production. Our approach with these pieces is conservative: we clean and lubricate what needs it, adjust regulation to the best achievable rate for the movement, and leave original components in place where possible.

Crystal work is often underestimated. Fitting or polishing a crystal on an older watch requires careful masking and the right materials for the case metal. A poorly fitted crystal can trap moisture or sit slightly proud, both of which cause problems over time. We take that stage slowly.

Johor Bahru's climate — warm and humid for much of the year — means that water resistance matters more here than in cooler, drier places. After any seal work, we check resistance using appropriate testing tools to make sure the watch is actually protected, not just reassembled.

We work from a workshop on Jalan Wong Ah Fook in the centre of the city, and walk-ins are welcome during our opening hours. If you'd prefer to discuss the work before coming in, a call or email is always welcome.
